Below, I discuss my corporate pay per click experience in written form (with some very exciting details). PPC Ian: An Overachiever For Life I’ve always been an overachiever. In my early days, I was Valedictorian of The Buckley School, one of the most prestigious and competitive high schools in Los Angeles. I thrived at this highly competitive high school and left a lasting legacy. As a natural progression, I attended Stanford University and flourished in their Computer Science program, while also acting as co-president of The Charles R. Blyth Fund, one of the most prestigious student-managed investment funds in the country. In June, 2004 I graduated Stanford University with my BS in Computer Science and minor in Economics. Computer Science was awesomely challenging and I really enjoyed it, but left Stanford feeling a bit burnt out from the all nighters and lack of communication with humans. I knew at that point that I wanted to leverage my analytical and algorithmic skills from Computer Science while acting more on the business side of things. My Beautiful Wife, Nicole, Gave Me The Luck I Needed PPC Ian and Nicole Right around this time, I also met my beautiful and amazing wife, Nicole. She was a freshman at UC Santa Cruz so I definitely wanted to stay in the Bay Area to be with Nicole. I actually had the opportunity at this point to work for my Dad at his real estate business in Los Angeles. While I’m still considering working there one day, I’m really glad I stuck it out in the Bay Area. For anyone new in their career, I cannot say enough about learning to stand on your own two feet by taking the more difficult path (if you take only one lesson from this site, please challenge yourself with the difficult path). The satisfaction and growth I experienced in my first few years out of school on my own are truly invaluable. Moreover, I just couldn’t imagine life without Nicole. In fact, had I not met Nicole I most likely would have moved back to LA – Nicole has always brought me the best of luck! By staying in the Bay Area and pursuing my career in pay per click search engine marketing, I have grown to heights I could have never imagined. Transitioning From Stanford Computer Science To Corporate SEM So I graduated Stanford and needed a job, but I definitely didn’t want to program. There were a few routes I explored: investment banking, management consulting, and the “business analyst” side of technology. I very quickly ruled out the first two, I just didn’t like the vibe that I got from the people and the industry in general. When I was starting to get desperate, I found a small company called NexTag at the Stanford Career fair, almost by chance. After briefly talking to the recruiter at the career fair, I immediately knew that company was my destiny. It was the ideal combination of the business analyst role with technology and operations. For the next two years and seven months, I learned pay per click, people management, process management, and product management from the best manager I have ever had to this day. NexTag: The Foundation of My Entire Pay Per Click Career While we’re on the topic of NexTag, I’m going to set the record straight – I’m very passionate about the following point. Without a doubt, NexTag was the best corporate experience I have ever had in my life. I got promoted several times, got an additional stock option grant, quickly managed the entire SEM team, and even reported to the Executive Vice President of Engineering at one point (only a few years out of college). In short, NexTag set the foundation for my entire career. I continue to be thankful for my experience every single day. Moreover, NexTag is the gift that keeps on giving: I’m a very proud shareholder of NexTag stock. Another side note and one of the main reasons I stress building your PPC career via the corporate route is the great opportunity to build a personal diversified portfolio of stock in private companies. I know own stock in three very successful private companies! (You may want to check out my post about how I Made It Big In Online Marketing with corporate stock options.) Transitioning To A Higher Title At QuinStreet So why did I leave? It was a very difficult decision. I was a Marketing Analyst and Team Lead at NexTag and got an unsolicited offer to step up to the Senior Manager role at competitor QuinStreet. (Side note: You may want to check out my post about Getting Passive Job Opportunities on LinkedIn.) My ideal opportunity came across and I just couldn’t pass it up. I became QuinStreet’s Senior Manager of financial services online marketing. I got to broaden my expertise from comparison product shopping and mortgage at NexTag to a plethora of new verticals: debt, credit cards, insurance, travel, B2B, franchise, and so much more. Moreover, I enjoyed the opportunity to learn new marketing channels (such as SEO and the long tail domain strategy), in addition to an entirely different culture. Whereas NexTag taught me all about process and automation, QuinStreet developed my sales skills. It was definitely not easy. While I got several pay raises and additional stock option grants at QuinStreet, I never made it to the coveted Director level. However, this experience did set me up for the most amazing sprint of growth yet! Time To Move On For Added Stability So I had been at QuinStreet for over two years and things were starting to change in the financial services landscape. As the head of financial services search marketing during the rough times starting in late 2008 and someone who recently purchased a home with my wife, it was time for me to seek added stability in an industry outside finance. Thankfully, I have just about the most robust LinkedIn profile possible and get job opportunities frequently. As things started to change, I started entertaining the offers that I previously had passed by. Very quickly, an amazing opportunity came up to lead SEM at Palo Alto startup Inflection (formerly People Search Media). My First Startup PPC Experience: Inflection (Formerly People Search Media) It was a welcome change. I enjoyed reporting to my 22 year old boss who started the company out of this Harvard dorm room. How amazing and inspirational is that! I leveraged my experience from NexTag and QuinStreet to build the infrastructure, technology, and process from the ground up. I enjoyed the benefits of a very flat and open organization, in addition to accumulating stock in a very exciting and fast-growing company with the strong likelihood of a liquidity event in the coming years. I was quickly promoted to the coveted Director title (one of the largest milestones in my career to date) in a company where there are very few Directors and executives. I became a recognized leader in the company and mentored the careers of many, my absolute favorite reason to get up every single morning. In addition to all this great stuff, I learned so much about launching new businesses, SEO, affiliate marketing, and so much more. Inflection.com took my online marketing skillset to the next level. I’m Now Director of SEM At a Large Public Company So everything is going great and then, one day, my world gets turned upside down! I get the amazing opportunity to step up as Director of Online Marketing at a large publicly traded company. Now, you know I just got promoted to Director at Inflection so you may be thinking, why is he so excited about moving to a different company? It was a terribly difficult decision, but an offer came alone that was just too amazing to pass up! This move marks a healthy step up in my career and reputation in the space. The fact that I’ve gone from Marking Associate to Director of Search Marketing at a publicly traded company within five years of graduating Stanford is amazing! Moreover, I get the amazing opportunity to report to this company’s CMO, a world-famous marketer and leader in the space. However, that’s not the purpose of this site and I don’t want to give that impression. As mentioned earlier, the main reason I get up every single morning is mentoring and helping others. My largest successes have been the promotion of my direct reports. I have former direct reports who are now Senior Managers and even Directors themselves, at very large and successful companies. That is just about the best feeling in the world! However, I quickly learned it’s not scalable. My goal is to help as many people as possible and I can only manage and mentor so many reports in my normal job. How I Earned $4,874.36 on eBay Partner Network Posted by: PPC Ian Comments: 26 comments so far Jun. 05 In the last three months (February – May), I earned $4,874.26 on the eBay Partner Network (EPN). That’s an average of about $52.98 per day of pure margin SEO income (no media costs attached). Considering I hold a demanding full time job (that I love) and that the time I invest in my eBay Partner Network websites is low (maybe 1 hour/week on average), I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. Since my prior posts about my EPN earnings have been so popular (Scoring Record EPN Earnings and My EPN Earnings Rock), I thought I’d do another eBay post today to share my success and a few tips so you too can build your own passive income stream while driving substantial user value. When you’re done reading my tips, make sure to check out the screen shot at the bottom of this post that highlights my earnings! Tip 1: Focus On An Authority Website My eBay Partner Network Earnings come from one authority website that I started back in 2007. I started this website about a topic I love! Due to my passion, I was able to write hundreds of articles that users love while really sharing my own personality and perspective with my visitors. I consistently get emails from my visitors saying they love my site and I’ve truly helped them. I invested a ton of sweat equity in the early days (mainly 2007-2008), and continue to update my website consistently to this day (although my commitment right now is about 1 hour/week). (Side note: I don’t want to give the illusion that passive income is easy. It takes a ton of up front work, it’s just that I’m now enjoying the passive aspect of my income stream because my EPN operation has matured.) By focusing on one site, I was able to build a ton of quality traffic within a particular niche, thus having the ability to send eBay lots of qualified visitors. I have found that the large scale approach (when combined with quality) works really well! So, if you’re thinking about going the multi-site route versus the authority site route, I’d highly recommend going with an authority site. Tip 2: Don’t Go Overboard With Links To eBay You’d be surprised! I don’t have a ton of links to eBay on my authority website. I almost make my visitors look for them. This is really important. eBay is measuring results (in the form of account sign-ups and also winning bids) and will pay you higher EPCs if you drive higher quality traffic. In fact, they tend to over-reward their highest quality sources of traffic. (Side note: You can learn more about this in my review of eBay’s Quality Click Pricing.) For this very reason, it’s of paramount importance you don’t go overboard and you only send quality traffic. My personal approach has involved extremely long, complex, passionate articles that truly help users with maybe one link to eBay. I could send probably 5 times as much traffic to eBay as I am now, but I don’t want to compromise the quality because then my EPCs would plummet. Tip 3: Leverage Text Links To eBay eBay offers a ton of complex ways to link to them. They offer widgets, the ability to embed eBay results right on your website, and all sorts of options. When it comes to SEO, my strategy is one of keeping it very simple. As such, the majority of my eBay links are text links. Of course, I sprinkle in a few widgets too, but those represent the minority of my EPN clicks. My advice is to not overlook the simple, text link strategy because it works really well with Tip 2 (keeping your traffic quality high). I hope these tips help you out! I’m super thrilled with my eBay results because of the passive income, but more importantly because I’m learning. 5 ways to increase your EPN EPC – are you implementing them? About the eBay Partner Network Before you start STOP!!: four FATAL mistakes new Internet marketers make! As you probably know, the eBay Partner Network (the eBay affiliate program) is a form of Pay-Per-Click program – you get paid a certain amount for each click you send from your site to an eBay site. The exact way that eBay calculate the value of your click is not entirely transparent under EPN’s QCP (Quality Click Pricing) system, but there are a number of known factors that affect your EPC (Earnings Per Click). I have written about these in quite a lot of detail in my book eBay Niche Domination (go and grab it if you haven’t already, it’s free!) so I won’t go into great detail about all of the different things that affect your EPC positively or negatively. However, there are a few proven things you can do to maximise your EPC: promote stuff that actually sells on eBay! Yes, there is all kinds of stuff for sale on eBay, but it doesn’t all sell that well. If you choose a duff niche you could find yourself with plenty of visitors to your site, and even a decent number of clicks through to eBay, yet your EPC will be miserably low (possibly in the very low single figures). The reason is that some stuff just does not sell online. People search for it online, browse for information, even click through to eBay, but then they go and buy it in a brick-and-mortar shop. In keyword terms, this is what we call a “non-buying keyword” or a keyword with “low commercial intent”. Again, I have given a detailed guide on how to avoid these duff niches and find HOT selling niches in my free guide, eBay Niche Domination, but in short, if bids are sluggish and turnover is low, then it won’t sell for you either, and your EPC will suffer. promote reasonably-priced items. EPN EPC is directly related to the price of items you sell. If your referrals are buying items selling at around $10, then the percentage eBay earns, and passes on to you in the form of EPC is logically going to be low. Of course, you can still make money by selling a LOT of low-priced items, but bear in mind, EPN are not too keen on that model, and when a lot of people were being axed from EPN a couple of years ago, one reason cited was sales of exclusively low-priced items. Better choose products in the $50-$100 bracket at least, which is probably going to ensure an EPC of over $0.10 (though that’s just a rough guide) – though I have had EPC leap up to several dollars on the back of the sale of items worth thousands. It’s just a case of whether you can find niches like that which have a decent volume too. My Wordbay plugin lets you filter eBay items according to a minimum price, so that is also a way to ensure EPC stays high. pre-sell your visitors. Another area where you can work to improve your EPN EPC is by preselling your visitors effectively. This takes some marketing skill. It’s not enough just to write a dull overview of the product in question, you want to actually persuade your prospect to buy it, not just to click through. You will have to figure that part out for yourself! But the more likely a visitor is to buy when they get to eBay, the more sales you are going to get and the more your EPC will grow. EPN is NOT just about “click and forget” – about sending the user to eBay and hoping they buy. The more preparation you can do to get them in a buying mood, the more you are going to earn! block bots from your sites. There are a lot of bots around the net which roam around websites, sniffing for various forms of information for their owners. Apart from wasting bandwidth, if they follow your eBay links they will register clicks in EPN but of course not buy anything, therefore destroying your EPC (it can actually bomb to ZERO for a number of days after an attack like that). EPN DO filter a lot of bot traffic, but they can’t catch all of it. If you see a big, unnatural spike in your EPN stats, that’s probably what it is. It is worth reporting those to EPN and hopefully getting those clicks discounted so they don’t ruin your EPC. But better still to block them altogether. There are various scripts around that could help with this, but Wordbay can help a little with this too – see point 4. hide eBay links from visitors from “non-eBay countries”. eBay has sites in a dozen countries, or so, you know that. When a visitor comes to your site from any country that does not have an eBay site (e.g. Vietnam), what are the chances they will buy something from eBay.com? Well, they might, but my experience is that statistically they are far less likely to buy anything if they click through. As a consequence they browse around eBay but don’t buy anything. That also does damage to your EPC. After a Wordbay user alerted me to this fact, I implemented some code in my plugin that allows you to show alternative code to anyone visiting your site from a non-eBay country – e.g. Adsense, or some banner code. Well, I will show you an image of my EPC graph since I implemented that and activated it on my sites:A graph showing improved EPC in EPN after implementing changes The red frame shows the period after I started blocking non-eBay countries. Can you see the difference? Previously my EPC was constantly up and down, really unstable and often depressingly low. After this one change, sure it still fluctuates a little, but nothing like as much as before, and most importantly, it is on average almost DOUBLE what it was! OK, results may vary, and all that – but that is a pretty cheap way to nearly double your earnings, wouldn’t you say?! That is a new feature in Wordbay as of version 1.7, and I am really pleased with it – I am glad I listen to my users, too :) Oh, and a cool side-effect of this relates to point 5 – because a LOT of bad bots are from countries which do not have eBay sites, they automatically get served something OTHER than eBay links, so they never see your eBay links and never get to click on them. This will also really help boost your EPC! Well, those are just a few things you can do to help improve your EPC – of course, some of the most effective solutions require a bit of technology, but there are also some things there that you can implement straight away. So, get implementing them, and let’s get that EPC under control, and up in the double figures where it belongs!

This story is the journey of a college dropout that started an online business in his college dorm room from scratch and grew it to a business generating over $100,000 yearly… Hey guys, my name is Kevin and Tyler has given me the opportunity to tell my story about how I’ve built an online business from scratch starting out in my college dorm room with no experience. It all started in 2004 when I was 16 years old. My friend had been making a couple thousand dollars per month as a poker affiliate (referring real money players to poker sites). To a teenager, as you can imagine, “a couple thousand dollars” monthly was a huge deal and I was wondering how I could do the same. He gave me a little bit of background info on how he got started and he referred to a forum that would help. I did some research but at 16 I had no background in running websites and didn’t even have a clue how to get started. I eventually gave up and continued on with my life. 3 years later I was in university in my hometown and one of the business classes I had to take was Computer Science. This was basic computer science that included created basic html websites that we would upload onto the university server. I had created my first very basic and very ugly html website and learned how to use an FTP program to upload a website. While creating my first website in class I remembered about my buddy who was making money online back a few years. I went back to my college dorm room where I was living for the school year and searched for that forum I had signed up for in the past. My account was still around from when I was 16 and signed up – “Poker69” – what a great forum name. Anyways I started doing a bunch of research on the forum and almost right away starting asking a bunch of very basic questions on how to get a website online and running. Luckily for me there were some very great people posting on the forums and they didn’t shut me out of their community, like I notice a lot of forums will do these days. Instead I got a ton of help and advice and figured out the basics, including buying a domain and getting a hosting account so that I could have my first website online. I created my first two websites, which were both poker related. The first was one directed towards my university and the other was just a general poker site. I kept asking questions and doing my own research about SEO so that I could have my websites found by people in Google. I remember spending like 5-6 hours a night with my dorm room door shut just working away. I became hooked when my first website went live. Making My First Dollar Online Almost right away I made about $200-$300 on my first site, but the catch is that it was all from friends signing up for poker sites through my referral links. The second site would take a couple months to make it’s first dollar, but when it did I remember being ecstatic. Someone in the world actually searched in Google, found my site, read my content, and signed up for real money under my referral link. The first $100 felt like a million bucks. I had been reading blogs with people claiming to make a couple thousand, even $10,000+ per month online with their websites. At that time I felt like it would be nearly impossible for someone like me to make that much money, and I would be happy with even $500/month. My first website I created targeted my universities name and they didn’t like that, so they had me shut it down. It didn’t make any money outside of the few friends I referred so that wasn’t a big deal. I continued to work hard on my second website and ended up making a couple hundred dollars for two or three months in a row. Then something else happened that I remember thinking was insane. Someone contacted me through the forum I would post on and asked if they could purchase advertising on my website. I had known that people bought ads from other sites, but I didn’t think anyone would be interested in my site. And at the time I was thinking they were going to offer me maybe $50-$100. They ended up offering me $800 for a handful of ads on my websites pages and again I was ecstatic. Of course I accepted right away. This just made me more excited to work on my websites and I would continue logging 5-6 hours straight on my computer reading, writing, creating, and asking questions. The only problem with this is that I wasn’t putting much time into my school work, and it was showing with my grades. I did enough to just get through the first year of university and by that time I was making about $500/month. A Bold Move Instead of getting a summer job that year I decided that I would work on my own websites, and then also do some writing work for others to earn some extra money. My full time summer job the year before had me earning about $400 per week, and I figured I could write about 15 articles at $20 a piece each week and make just as much money after adding in my own website’s earnings. I remember people would always ask me if I’m getting a “real” job (which continued for a few years as well). In my mind this was a real job. I was making just as much money as I would have doing any other summer job, and my websites were making more and more money each month. By the end of the summer I had created a few new websites, and they were earning over $1000/month combined. I decided to take the year off of school and continue to build my online business. That ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve made in my young life. Throughout that year off I grew my websites and was making probably $3,000/month on average. I figured it would be smart to go back to school for an easier college business marketing class. I would learn marketing and business and have something to fall back on in case my income disappeared. While in my first year of that two year program I continued to work hours at a time on my websites in my room. At the time I was living with three good friends so it was tough to choose work over stuff like watching sports or playing Xbox, but I was so focused on my websites and making a living working online that I buckled down and continued to put in the hours. I had my poker websites going and started to create sports betting sites as well. A Game Changer Another game changer for me. I had an offer on my network of poker websites. One of the big time affiliates had contacted me via email asking me if I was interested in selling any of my sites. After some negotiation I ended up selling my network of websites for $80,000 (it worked out to $79,472 after fees). The decision was tough as those websites were generating a lot of revenue, but I had lost my passion for poker and started getting really interested in sports betting. Being 21 years old at the time I could have gone a while living off that money and could have bought a lot off stuff for myself and lost motivation in my websites and my business, but I knew even with that money I would continue to be focused. I paid off my car and invested most of the rest of the money back into my sites over the next year. 2010 was my first year making “six figures”, but that included a website network sale that wiped out a lot of my monthly revenue. I knew to get back to six figures in 2011 I would need to keep the daily grind going. I went back to school in September of 2010, but a few months in I decided that with where my business was I needed to put 100% of my efforts into it. I ended up dropping out of my college program in December. Dropping out of college was a huge decision for me. At the time, I spent hours and hours debating it, asking others for advice, and eventually came to the decision. I drove to the college and filled out the paper work to drop out of my classes. Now looking back I am very confident I made the right decision. After dropping out I immediately got focused on my business and spent all of my focus on building my websites, instead of having to worry about going to class and doing school work. I started to focus on one sports betting site that would cover all sports and everything sports betting. TheSportsGeek.com has come along way since it first went online, but it is now my biggest website and income generator. It gets roughly 1500-2000 visitors per day with over 50% of those repeat visitors (most which visit daily for betting picks). Between The Sports Geek and my other smaller niche sports websites I ended up breaking the six figure mark again in 2011. I think it was near the end of 2011 when I started branching out and creating fitness websites. I was (and still am) really interested in and passionate about sports and working out/fitness, so I decided to focus my efforts in those two areas. I knew of some fitness experts that had been making very good money with their workout related websites and products and thought I could do the same. I launched my first fitness product through Clickbank and tested out paid traffic. I burnt through about $3,000 from my ads and only made about $900. Looking back at it I probably didn’t test enough variations of my sales page, but decided to put that project on hold because it was taking up a lot of my valuable time and I was losing money. My focus has almost all been on my sports betting websites over the past few years, and I’ve started membership type sites where I provide daily betting picks for three sports I handicap (NFL, NHL, and MLB). I started these as free websites, but again it was taking up a huge chunk of my time and I wasn’t earning enough money to make it worth my time. I had been told I should be charging for my picks because of my success, so I gave it a shot. I enjoy providing my insights to a large number of people so I kept my membership prices low. This has worked out great as I am now getting paid for my time and efforts. My time and income for 2012 (and so far in 2013) has been split with about 95% of my efforts and revenue coming from my sports betting websites, 2.5% effort and profits from my fitness sites, and 2.5% effort and revenue coming from my personal Internet marketing blog where I test, review and recommend products for internet marketers. 2012 was my third straight year hitting the “six figure” bench mark that so many entrepreneurs look to hit. I am truly blessed to have come as far as I have come so far with my business, but it hasn’t come without hard work. I will leave you with a few key points from my story that can help you build your online business. What You Can Learn From My Story… Work Hard – Like I mentioned a few times throughout my story, I would sit at the computer for 5-6 hours each night (after school and sports) working late into the night on my websites. There were a lot of 12 hour days at my computer where I would work from early in the morning to late at night. I still work almost 7 days per week on my business and although I don’t put in as many hours these days I am always trying to work hard. Dedication – There have been tons and tons of nights that I’ve turned down stuff like going out drinking with friends so that I could work on my websites, or make sure I’m not hungover so I could work all day Saturday. I’ve got writers helping me now, but I used to spend about 10 hours each Saturday writing and posting NFL picks for my sports site, so I almost used to never go out on a Friday night. Working from home I could easily head downstairs and play Call of Duty, but I’ve continued to keep the dedication needed to grow my business each year. Get Help – When first starting out I had a few people that would help me out all the time. They probably spent hours over the first year or two helping me with my websites and answering my “stupid” questions. You can’t be afraid to ask for help. Find a mentor and give them something in exchange. It doesn’t have to be money. A lot of people will be willing to help you so just ask – it is good karma for the person helping you (think pay it forward). Follow Your Dreams – I was lucky enough to be a teenager when I started up my online business. I didn’t have a wife or family to support at all, so it made the decision a lot easier to go “all in” with my business dropping out of school twice. If I had a family I needed to support, or didn’t have the business built up to where I had it I probably would have finished school, but I know I would have went right into working for myself full time afterwards. Everyone has their own unique situations, but at some point you need to make an educated decision on if you should go “all in” yourself with your business. My advice to others is to work on your online business while working a full time job. Wake up early or stay up late and work on your business.
